Good evening all.

I’m just back from a splendid weekend in Tryol ( southern Austria )
When I was working on my new book ( Rommel’s Afrika Korps in Colour ) I was contacted by a lovely Austrian gentleman called Peter Reisch.
Peter told me that his dad Max Reisch was a mechanic in the Afrika Korp from 1941 to 1943 and during his time in Africa, he took a few color slides. Peter let me use some of his fathers pictures in my new book.
But Peter told me, he did not want 1 euro ! but when the book was finished, I must deliver him a copy in his hand.

So on Friday after work, I packed my stuff and drove the 3 hours down from Munich to Solden in Austria.. about 10km away from the Italian border.

There I spent almost 5 hours talking to Peter and about his father in Afrika. Peter loved the book and brought me into the famous Cross Point Motorbike Museum where there is a permanent exhibition of the world travel bikes and cars from this fathers world travels, the famous Austrian explorer Max Reisch.
I was even allowed to sit in and on some of the famous cars that Max himself had designed and built before and after the second world war.

What an absolute honor and dream come true, to meet such people thanks to my crazy hobby…

All charged up with new amazing history and am reading one of Maxes famous books. “Out of the Rat Trap” escaping Africa in 1943…. woww.

Anyway, because its history and connected with my colour slides, I thought I would share my experiences with you all.

You know when you buy a old war time photo album and you will automatically flip past the black and white photos of the soldiers house or apartment… but now when I see this color slide from Leipzig 1945… it is so interesting to see inside the homes of these people.. there furniture.. the old beautiful heater on the left.. the amazing old wood floors… the details just pop out of this great old color slide.

Saturdays post just came in. A lovely collection of roughly 100 new agfacolor color slides in both paper AFRA frames and also metal FILMOSTO frames.
The collection shows family life from a Leipzig family between 1940 to 1945. I love the color slides marked on the frames with Sommer 1945… what a crazy time to be sitting in the garden just chillin…..

This is why I love history because the people making the money use the same game plan over and over again and if you have the history, you can see this.

Here we have western European forces organizing in Poland 1941 to fight the Russians in Russia / Ukraine. Sound familiar ?

Zhmerinka railway station

The building of the station was constructed in the shape of a ship sailing to Odessa probably because it was the first railway line leading to the sea.

Thank you, much appreciated! The first word is definitely “Ukrainian”, the lower line, is a bit trickier – I think I can make out letter “B” – which would stand for “Військо” – army, alternatively it could be the Trident emblem.

This image looks almost the same as the above. From a set of naval personal who spent time in Ukraine and The Crimea.
Other images show a ship building or large industrial site with military equipment, scattered around the place.

Here is the latest agfacolor to slide out of my nikon coolscan V enjoy. german soldiers eating lunch beside a train in france 1940.The train wagon is the background shows the star of david. Meaning it was used to transport Jewish people. A sad history.
Thats why these old photos are so important. to remind us of our history and what we did wrong, so we may never repeat such things again.

I was working for a bit this evening on the wonderful collection of color slides from the 167th infantry division that was given to me as a present last week by a lovely lady in Munich Here is one of the agfacolor slides taken in russia 1941, showing the normal scanned slide and then with ICE and a tiny bit of photoshop. Some of these old slides can still be really rescued and brough back even after 70 years of wear. Stay well. Ian (farbdias)

Kassel in Germany 1944. original rare color photos showing the destruction and bombing of this large industrial city. this is the first scan of a stunning new collection of 116 agfacolor color slides taken by an unknown german civilian documenting the bombings of Kassel Germany. Kassel was surrounded by some of the biggest airplane producers in germany and was one of the worst destroyed cities in germany during the war. This man wanted to document the results of this in stunning color. im very happy and proud to be adding this wonderful historcial period book produced by german war photographers for all propaganda units on all fronts to my collection. In this rare 1944 version, the magazine is telling war photographers to please not send their normal isopan and agfacolor film to the Munich processing labs due to heavy bombing.. all photograpehers should send their films to Vienna for processing and return. Agfa also officially says that they are busy splitting up their processing labs for both color and black and white film and spreading them across germany. As berlin has become a big target for allied bombing.
This set of mazaines are so crazy hard to find but one of the best first hand sources of german propaganda photography.. amazing information..

funny i just googled the address.. sadly no reference to the family business 　 and if you do street maps you find only the normal big business 　 all the small family business are wiped out of the town center.. but.. the funny thing is.. I have actually been on the street where the shop was located in 1940.. hehe.. small world.. I was there 5 years ago visiting some Dutch friends for… Kings Days I think its called… lovely town and there was a cool Flea Market on all the small roads between the little houses..

i just wanted to add a little comment. I have reduced the quality of the samples on my website because a few different russian websites were taking out my logo and using the images for different purposes.

I have also massively reduced the price of buying images on pixpast.com so if someone really loves an image or needs it for his model making project, then the simple option is to buy the super quality image online for a few dollars. Then everyone is happy.

How to re-use old photo slide boxes with horrible green foam padding.

For many many years during the 1950s to the 1980s many producers in Europe (mostly Germany) produced beautiful wooden boxes to hold photo slides but they sadly added a strange green blue foam padding to the top insides of each box.
The problem is, after 30 or more years this foam turns into a weird green powder. And when you use these boxes and put in your old slides, the powder falls in between the slides and also attaches itself to the surface of the slides. In this case when the slides have no glass or plastic covering.

After some years the flakes from this powder permanently attach themselves to the surface of the slides and are almost impossible to remove. You also can destroy a photo slide by trying to remove the dust particles.

So my best tip. Is to take the wooden boxes. Get a paint scraper with a sharp edge and chisel out the foam as best as you can. Knock out the powder into the bin and then apply warm water to the inside top of the wooden box. Let that set for 5 minutes and then go back with your paint scraper and peel off the bottom glue layer of the foam. With a little muscle, you can get almost everything out.

Drain the water and dry the box with some kitchen paper. Use a vacuum cleaner to vacuum up all the fallen particles on the other side of the box.

Then leave the box open in a dry room for 2 or 3 days to fully fully dry out. You don’t want a wet wooden box holding your old slides… nope 😦

After that your finished.
It sounds like a lot of work but it really isn’t. Maybe 10 minutes max ! And then you can store your slides in the wooden box.

One last interesting thing. These slide boxes are normally more than 30 years old. They are very dry and normally so well made that they also give a very close air tight seal. They are an excellent option for storing your slides. Try and Dark 🙂

hi guys. I mentioned a few days ago a friend of mine last weekend found a box of old german war slides at a flea market in west germany. He found it under a mountain of old cloths and magazines in a everything cost 1 euro box… 🙂 So just got them now.. cool 🙂

More than 80 agfacolor private color slides taken by a german Funker radio man in an artillery unit. Kasserne life 1938 or 1939.. not sure where yet but there are lots of great color slides showing a big city with a cathedral.. so i think ill find that 🙂 Here is the sneak peek 🙂

Ill be working on these the next few weeks and adding them to pixpast as I find time.

I bought this old 1940s agfa metal advert box a while back at a Munich flea market. Then 2 weeks later I was able to buy an original photo showing the exact same agfa advert on the outside of a munich photo shop (marienplatz) I wonder could this be the same advert box ? Its still in a great condition and makes for a super display.

Picture Past Colour
photographs from
the Second World War

The Post was recently contacted by Ian Spring, a specialist collector and
dealer in colour photographs taken in WW2 who has found a few taken in
Bristol in 1943-44. He has very kindly sent us scans to show you now. We’ve
looked at them all very carefully and have been able to identify some of the
locations, but not all. Some of them were definitely taken in London, so we’ve
not reproduced them here, but some there’s a question mark over, so
perhaps you can help out. We don’t know the identity of the photographer,
but as the pictures were found by one of Mr Spring’s contacts in the United
States, he (or possibly she) was almost certainly American. S/he was probably
an officer; in the 1940s, buying colour film and getting it developed was
expensive on the pay of a private soldier, even an American one. One of the
photos, and possibly a second, show the U.S. hospital at Frenchay, so our
photographer may have been a medic of some kind.

In the late 1930s Kodak made its
new Kodachrome (initially designed
for home movies) available in
35mm format, while in Germany
Agfa introduced Agfacolor Neu.
Colour photography was expensive,
and it was almost impossible to take
pictures indoors, but there were
surprisingly large numbers of
colour photos taken, particularly by
Americans and Germans, and
collectors like Ian Spring are now
uncovering more and more of them
all the time.
With more than 33,000 colour
slides from the 1930s to 1945, Mr
Spring owns one of the world’s
leading collections of private
unpublished Second World War
colour photography.

The bomb damage, tidied up for the duration, as viewed from what was left of the old Wine Street. The spire of St
Nicholas is on the left and Christ Church with St Ewen in the centre.

Nissen huts (or are they American Quonset huts?
Can anyone tell the difference?), location unknown, but very
probably Frenchay Hospital. Frenchay Village Museum kindly showed BT some
contemporary photos which bear some resemblance to this scene. If this is the case, then
according to a map held by the Museum this was the “enlisted men’s quarters.” That is, accommodation
for men below officer rank. It might be that our anonymous photographer was one of the 298th’s staff.

A padre in British Army battledress, location
unknown, but it looks like some sort of
services camp. Frenchay did not have
wooden huts of this design though they
were very common elsewhere. Anyone
have any ideas? (Thought not, but
no harm in asking …) Was he
the man responsible for those
fine flower beds?

It took us ages to work
this one out. The
picture was taken on
Park Place, Clifton and
is looking towards the
premises of John E.
Pritchard, auctioneers
and valuers, on
Queens Road. This is
currently the premises
of the Skipton Building
Society. The building
to the left was a
branch of Barclays
Bank, which was later
demolished and
though Barclays still
occupies the site, the
visible part of this
photo is now a Café
Nero. Note also the
removal van of
Lalonde Brothers &
Parham, an old local
firm which (we think)
may have had its
Bristol offices at the
Pritchard premises.

not far from the ruins of St Peter’s
Church and looking down Union
Street. You can just make out the
top of the Odeon cinema on the left.

just got this little mystery box of slides… costed.. dont laugh… 3 euros online but I just spotted the old metal frames could be war time… so for 3 euros I took a chance. They should be landing in the post box tomorrow.. .. lets see what happens

these are color slides in metal frames. but if you look closely you can spot a few sharp cornered DGRM metal war time slides and also a few metal war time filmosto slide frames. Then you have a good chance that the slides are from before 1945… and most slides were actually in color. Strangely enough when agfacolor offered there color film for slides, nearlly all the german users jumped over to color when they had a chance…

Nearlly all his 2500 negatives, 370 color slides and 7 8mm home movies come from his time in Ukraine 1941 to 1943. ( so 17. Armee )

End of 1943 his medical transport unit was sent to Southern France to refit and then 1944 was sent to Italy.

Does anyone have a map showing the path of movement of the 17th army in Ukraine 1941 to 1943 ?

I was digging around my old photo slide boxes tonight and dug up this old color slide. Showing german troops with their petrol tanker before the war. Its not a really special historical image BUT… after scanning it fresh with my Epson V700 tonight and comparing it with my last 15 year old scan, its really amazing to see the improvements and how these old slides can still be so fantasticaly restored with a little TLC

Photo Slide Collector Ian Spring expands his search for rare color photography and starts his new search at the famous Brimfield Flea Market beside Boston USA 🙂

So the World search for original color photography from World War Two has brought me to the famous and monster Flea market in Brimfield near Boston this year.

First impression… it was fantastic !!

Very hot with 38 degrees but it was a happy and welcoming atmosphere with thousands of sellers offering you basically anything you want or needed or.. didn’t really need 😉

I was on the search of course for color slides and color film from the time period 1935 to 1945.
I wasnt disappointed. Within the first hour I found an original 8mm color kodachrome home movie filmed in New York city in 1945… for 5 dollars !! YIPPPEE 🙂

I then later found a small box of color slides from an american soldier 1942 doing military training.

One of the big extras for me was the great contacts I made.

My family may have laughed when I got a t-shirt printed (do you have ww2 color slides ?) but many people saw it and a few came over and swapped details because they did have material at home 🙂

So my search for color photography has now expanded into 2 continents 🙂

As I was in the beautiful Boston area, I was able to visit some other sites of historical interest including the John F Kennedy Museum and I was also able to pay respects to the (The New England Holocaust Memorial)
I never forgot, even with collecting photos, how much… evil was actually involved in this historical time and during the second world war.
And I hope that sharing my collection online that people see how bad these times actually were and that it should never never be repeated. Also the loss of so many innocent people, young and old that were slaughtered as a result of…evil…including millions of Jewish families 😦

End of World War Two Here is an amazing private color 16mm home movie from an American GI that filmed the American army moving through Nazi Germany (south germany) 1944 and 1945. A lot of the color film footage is filmed in the city of Nuremberg Germany. Paris 1939 in COLOR !! Here is a wonderful private 16mm kodachrome and agfacolor color home movie I found years ago at a flea market. It is taken by an american tourist in and around Paris France 1939 just before the German invasion 1940 and at the same time as the Second World War broke out with the German invasion of Poland 1939. These wonderful rare color scenes of Paris life have never been seen before. As I have collected thousands of color photo slides from all nations during the Second World War, I have also had the luck to find some fantastic private home movies from that time period in 8mm and 16mm format. Taking some of my favourite color photo slides from my 32.000 strong collection. I have worked together with a designer and friend to produce this beautiful 2018 historical photographic calender.

The old slides are scanned and cleaned by professionals and give the viewer the chance to see many locations around the World like they were photographed yesterday.

All photos come from my private photo collection and are from the years 1935 to 1945.

One would be surprised to find out that colour images of the greatest global conflict mankind has ever faced look like they were shot just yesterday, making World War Two a contemporary affair.

Mr. Ian Spring is definitely not the average WW2 collector and his wide colour slides library, now counting well over 32,000 different shots from almost every corner of the conflict, is now available to researchers, historians and everyone interested in World War 2, via his website www.pixpast.com

And in Ian’s exact words, “Somehow share you treasures. Don’t lock them away in cardboard boxes under the bed. Let people see the images. That’s why people took photos.. for them to be seen”.

What was the incentive to start your photo collection and why did you focus on colour slides?
It was a combination of different things. I was born with dyslexia so my mind worked with pictures and images a lot better than numbers and words. As I grew up both my parents spent a lot of time bringing me and my younger brother on trips to castles and old ancient sites all around Ireland. I learned from a very early age, a fascination for history and what people and civilizations have done before us.

It was only by the time I started University learning Industrial Design in Ireland that I had my first access to the world wide web.. aka. Internet.
One day I still remember I sat in the back of a boiling hot class room for computer programming (yawn) The teacher was late and I decided to use the internet. Ebay was a completely new thing for me and most Irish and I decided to have a gander.
Loaning to my fascination with history I searched for old historical photos. On the front page something caught my eye. Out of all the thousands of black and white images, a old gentlemen in Germany was selling a old wooden box with 400 color photo slides from a German soldier in Russia during World War Two.
This really surprised me as I had no idea that private people had the ability to make their own color photos during the 1930s and 1940s. The first color photos in my Irish family photo album started with the late 1960s.

The old wooden box of color slides costs me 400 euros on ebay… I won and now my problem was I didn’t have 400 euros…
I sold everything of mine that was not nailed down on the ground. Did jobs. Asked for loans from my brother and my two best friends.. But within a week I had the cash.
The newly discovered piece of color history was now mine.
Well not quite. The parcel from Germany was lost in the post for over 3 months.
Every day coming back from University my father almost killed me from asking every day if the parcel had arrived.
After 3 long months it finally arrived.. WOW…
Such an amazing combination.. a private diary of color photography from a normal soldier trying to survive the war and get back to his family. The daily life of a man involved in daily madness. Captured like it was yesterday.
I was now hooked.
I came from a middle class family, so I searched for any possibility to finance more of this color history.

I ended up buying little antiques.. anything. .. from Germany or france and putting everything in a backpack once a month and taking the local bus to Dublin to sell my wears in the big city.
I was able to make every month maybe 200 or 300 euros extra from my wheeling and dealing.
And with this little money I was able to finance the start of my collection.
Now over 17 years later and 32.000 color world war two slides standing in front of me, It has been a great adventure finding these pieces of peoples history.

Colour essentially makes photos much more relevant to today, as if they were shot yesterday, not 75 years ago. What is your opinion on the historical significance researching and essentially safeguarding those photos/slides, bringing History alive?
I believe humans repeat their history a lot. A lot more than we like to think about.
And very sadly one of the most destructive and stupid solutions we humans have cooked up during our existence on this planet is to try and wipe out our enemies or those who disagree with us.
From history we can see this solution does not work.
If through my work, my research and my investment in preserving these rare historical color photographs, people can see the everyday life of people during war, see the waste of life, young and old losing their precious lives due to war. If that helps future generation’s rethink the option of war… 1 percent of people think differently than my life investment has been justified.

Do you agree that photos depicting historical moments should be preserved and showcased for the present and future? What is a “lesson” you learned from your collection?
We forget things and we generalize things much too easily.
It’s a little scary because my wife is German and I’m Irish, so in the generation of our grandparents, my grandfather could have been fighting my wife’s grandad.. Different uniforms.. different nationality… using war to solve… well basically nothing and both side lie dead in a field in the middle of France.
We just always try our absolute best to remind future generations of what happened and how bad war is. World war two was a nightmare for millions. We can’t even image how bad a third world war would be… please god we never have to.
What have I learned from my collection? Lots of things actually. 17 years and my slide collection has been my biggest history teacher for half my life.
I would say it’s quite scary how many people still destroy these old slides. I would say at least 70% of old slides from the 30s and 40s are binned. People don’t want to know or put in the effort to record or keep these historical images.
Because slides are seen as an old photographic format people also are not interested.
If or when I am lucky and discover a collection of color slides taken by a german or American or british soldier during world war two, the pictures show a very different world than the famous war time propaganda photos we know so well from history books.
Not the typical storm trooping Germans through Paris France 1940. But images of a German soldier sitting in a hospital bed being visited by his wife and little son from Munich. Sitting and hugging each other. You know from the image the only thing the soldier wants is his home and family.

Future projects/publications: What are your plans for the future?
In the coming years I would like to see a lot more photo books being printed with the pixpast name. I have 32.000 color slides and I think that’s enough for a few amazing books. It just takes time and you need the right people to work with to get something good.
My first book Leipzig in Farbe was my first but hopefully not my last.

I’m also doing a lot of projects with magazines and TV in France and Germany.
Plus I’m always trying to add more new content onto the pixpast website.
Apart from the “typical” war colour photos/slides, there are many of daily life from the eyes of the average citizen. How important is it to put history in perspective?
Absolutely important. War time was not only on the battle ground. When the father was in Africa the wife and children sat down in a small apartment in London hoping that the building would not been hit my hitlers next blitz attack.
The whole normal life had to continue. And this was well photographed by civilian photographers and also soldiers on leave back home.
Whenever military photographs are shown in a book, magazine or TV… they should always be accompanied by the outer scenario. A big gun fires in the middle of a village but then show the little children hiding in a ditch behind the gun.. Scared of their lives from the sound.

(I know it is very difficult, but…) If you had to choose one specific colour photo, because of the story it tells, which one would it be and why?
A very tricky question. I guess it would actually come from my very first box of color slides.
An agfacolor german color slide showing a little brother and sister holding hands. A normal german soldier has just entered Russia 1941. Seeing a completely new world of culture custom and language. The young German man takes his Leica camera and photographs for posterity his first views into the east.
On the other side of this camera, a little Ukrainian brother and sister one minute playing with each other in the grandads garden, one minute later being asked to pose in front of a stranger in a strange uniform with helmet. They don’t understand the situation, they don’t understand the language, they do what they can only do, take each other’s hand.
That was a historical human moment captured in color. That’s what really moves me.

What would your advice be to collectors of period photos?
Somehow share you treasures. Don’t lock them away in cardboard boxes under the bed. Let people see the images. That’s why people took photos.. for them to be seen.
And of course protect them. Keep the slides or photos in a dry dark box away from moisture if possible. Also try and keep the image stored in an environment where the temperature does not go up and down too much.
Scan them with a really good scanner and keep the images digitally preserved in 2 or 3 different locations. It’s a lot work but if the originals are ever gone.. the images are not.

How important is it to have your collections online, accessible to everyone, as a tool to knowledge?
It makes the whole thing fun for me. I think it’s very boring sitting on boxes full of historical treasure and not letting the World see them.
A lot of people are now buying this rare color material simply as an investment. They buy wonderful slides and put them into a metal box for the next 50 years.
Once they are sold.. you never see them again. A lot more of this history is being locked away than being shared.

But hay, I think for my life I’ve made the right decision. In Ireland we have a little nice phrase “you can’t bring it with you” meaning when you die, you can’t bring one single penny with you. So I’m doing the great things now with my time and cash.

During the 17 years I have been collecting original prewar and wartime color photo slides from the period 1935 to 1945, I have had the chance to also acquire some interesting original packaged film products from also the 1930s and 1940s.
